- Description of Oakland, NJ -

Since Oakland NJ was ranked by Business Week in 2007 as 43rd in the top 50 towns to raise your kids, others are finding out what those who live in Oakland already know.  Oakland residents are justifiably proud of their community which provides excellent athletic and social programs for both adults and children.  Oakland enjoys some of the finest and most extensive facilities in the area.  There are nine tennis courts, ten baseball fields, a football field, plus several soccer fields. There is a Senior Center in town which provides those 55 and older with services and activities promoting well-being and community involvement.

Superior education benefits are afforded by 3 elementary schools:  Manito, Heights, and Dogwood; a middle school - Valley; and Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District which is comprised of two high schools - Indian Hills High School in Oakland and Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes.  Students can chose to attend either school - both are very highly rated.  Several pre-schools as well as parochial schools are located in town.

The Ramapo Mountains with its rolling terrain set the scene for the town of Oakland.  Route 202 (AKA Ramapo Valley Road), which is one of the country's first trading routes used by Native Americans, runs along the Ramapo River where historic homes and horse farms dot the roadside.  Oakland is also home to the Ramapo River Reserve community which was built within the last few years and offers a wonderful lifestyle for its residents.

The center of town has a downtown shopping area and easy access to Routes 208 & 287.  Access to Route 287, Route 17, Route 202, and the NY Thruway as well as public bus transportation allow for a convenient commute to New York City.
